BACKGROUND

The Association for the Empowerment of Women in Gemstone and Mineral Mining (AFWIGMM) is a membership, non-political, non-governmental organisation (NGO) established on 10th June 2003 and registered under the laws of Zambia. Its Secretariat is situated on Plot No. 11296, Nchoncho/Washama Roads light industrial area, Villa Elizabetha, Lusaka. It’s Postal address is Box 30556, Lusaka

The organisational  structure of AFWIGMM has the General  Assembly as the highest policy making organ. It elects the Executive Board which carries out the decisions of the General Assembly and supervises the National Secretariat  and other lower organs of  AFWIGMM

  AFWIGMM has established a network of Coordinators in All mining areas, as a way of decentralising planning, project implementation and monitoring of activities to promote Female participation in mining.

The National Secretariat, which is managed by a Chairperson is The hub of the Association. Its prime responsibilities include coordinating the work of the Provincial Boards and being the focal point for planning, advocating for policies and programmes that promote gender equity in the Mining Sector, Mobilising resources, Fostering critical linkages and partnerships with Government, the Donors, Private Sector, Other NGOs and International Agencies.

AFWIGMM’S activities are mainly carried out by Coordinators Strategically placed in each province and are in direct contact with grass root communities who are the main targets by the Association’s activities.Essentially, AFWIGMM is guided in its governance and     Administration by a Constitution, which clearly defines the structure, its various organs and their functions. Membership of AFWIGMM is open to women after payment of annual subscription fee of K100,000=00
